Sunday School

Sunday School

Christian Education at Our Saviour

Our Sunday School program involves all children ages 3 through the end of ninth grade.  Classes begin the Sunday after Labor Day and run through mid-June and are held from 9:00-10:15am. Each week, Sunday School begins with all children, grades PK-7, gathering together in the Sanctuary.  During this time, the children are welcomed, listen to a simple lesson, pray for loved ones, and sing some songs. After the group gathering, it's on to class where the children will participate in a variety of activities based on the day’s theme. Our curriculum this year (for grades PK-7) is SPARK from Augsburg Fortress. Spark is a faith formation program where each lesson gets the children opening the Bible and exploring God’s world.  Each week, a Bible lesson is the focus and is presented with age-appropriate activities and discussions. Each child is given his or her own Spark Story Bible or Spark Bible to use during class, as well as at home with their families. Throughout the year, the children have opportunities to be a part of the worship at Our Saviour.  Once a month, children in grades PK-5 will sing for the congregation during the 10:30am service.  They will learn and practice the song during our opening each week. Children, during the spring of 5th grade, will be taught how to acolyte and will be asked to be a part of a rotation for the 10:30am service.  Following Christmas, the children participate in an annual Epiphany Pageant and Dinner where we celebrate together as a congregation, remembering the special time of the birth of Jesus. Preparation for First Communion is done in 5th grade during our Sunday School time.  Children will meet for special classes for 4 weeks prior to Palm Sunday, which is when they will receive their first communion.  We currently use the curriculum Fed and Forgiven by Augsburg Fortress.  With this program, children will prepare for participation in Holy Communion by discussing the sacrament through thought-provoking, hands-on activities. Our Confirmation program is a two-year program beginning in the 8th grade and culminating with the Service of Affirmation of Baptism in May/June of 9th grade.  Confirmation students meet with teachers on Sunday mornings during the regular Sunday School hour, as well as with Pastor Rossman one evening during the week.  The current curriculum is Here We Stand by Augsburg Fortress.  Here We Stand is a solid Lutheran-based program structured to make faith come alive.  Updated and engaging, this two-year program gives the young adults a solid background as they prepare to become adult members of the church.  Throughout the Confirmation program, the students are asked to attend worship regularly, submit sermon notes, and participate in congregational and synodical youth activities.

Adult Forum

Believe it or not, Sunday School isn’t just for kids anymore.  During the Sunday School hour on Sunday mornings, adults (grade 10-through age 100+) are welcome to join Pastor Rossman for an adult study.  Currently, the program is The Gospel According to Mayberry, but varies from time to time.  No need to have any background or Biblical/Lutheran expertise to participate.  One is never too old for learning something new.  Have something to share? Any good ideas for a forum topic?  Let us know…we would love to hear from you!!!!

Vacation Bible School (VBS)

Vacation Bible School is held each summer, usually the first full week of August, from 9am to 12pm.  Children entering PK4 through 6th are welcome to attend.  Children need not be members of the congregation to participate.  The program is free of cost.  There is a family program on Thursday evening where the children will perform their songs and share their lessons with all.  This year, VBS will be held from August 6-10, 2012. It is always a fun-filled week for all involved!
