Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten journey to Easter. During these next forty days, take time to remember the loving God who gave us life and to whom one day we will return. Despite all of the possessions we manage to acquire during our short time here, our greatest possessions are the gifts God has given us in life and love.

We all have busy lives, but even in this situation, Jesus leads by example for us. Rather than flee persecution in order to continue his important work on Earth, he spends his last supper with his family of disciples, reminding us to break bread together. It is in that same spirit that we urge everyone to join us for a meal of bread and soup and a mid-week Lenten worship service. Come share a meal with your family in Christ and let us together remember that we are dust, and to dust we shall return.

Lenten Service Schedule

Every Wednesday starting March 4th and ending April 1st:

Soup Supper - 6:30pm

Mid-week Lenten Service - 7:30pm

Holy Week Services

Maundy Thursday - 7:30pm on April 9th

Good Friday - 7:30pm on April 10th

Easter Sunday - April 12th

We had shoes … lots and lots of shoes … everywhere! They have all been sent to Iraq for children we will never meet, yet we have touched their lives in a very special way. We are bringing a Grace Moment to these children. The amount of shoes that have been delivered from churches and individuals all over the area is truly awesome!

We let our light shine in this community. We are making a bold statement about our faith.

We are proclaiming God’s amazing grace!

Thank you for helping us as we let our light shine boldly in this community and create Grace Moments so that others may see our God as one of love and grace. Let God use you as His angel messenger to bring the good news to His people. The only God some people may ever know is the one they see in you. As we move into the Christmas season, let your light shine so that others may see your good works and glorify God.

Be bold in proclaiming God’s amazing grace!

What is the Book of Faith Initiative?

The Book of Faith initiative invites the whole church to become more fluent in the first language of faith, the language of Scripture, in order that we might live into our calling as a people renewed, enlivened, empowered and sent by the Word. This is an initiative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is an initiative that New Jersey Synod has taken on and one which we at Our Saviour Church are making a part of our lives.

The Bible is a book of faith

The Bible is the written Word of God that creates and nurtures faith through the work of the Holy Spirit and points us to Christ, the incarnate Word and center of our faith. The Bible invites us into a relationship with God, making demands on our lives and promising us life in Christ. The Bible tells the stories of people living their faith over the centuries and, through its demands and promises, forms us as a people of faith.

The language of Scripture
is our first language of faith

The language of the Bible becomes our language. It shapes how we think and speak about God, about the world, and about ourselves. We become renewed, enlivened, and empowered as the language of Scripture forms our hearts, our minds, our community conversation, and our commitments.

We have a calling as the people of God

Part of our calling is to know, hear, share, and be rooted in Scripture. We are renewed, enlivened, empowered and sent by the Word. As we live into our calling as people who are formed by Scripture, we become renewed in our faith, enlivened through the Spirit, and empowered through the cross of Christ to serve God and neighbor. The first year of the Book of Faith initiative centers on inviting everyone to join the conversation, to make a commitment, and to become part of the initiative. Join us as our conversations at Our Saviour begin in October on Sunday morning at 9:30 am and on Tuesdays at noon. It promises to be a conversation that enlightens, inspires, and edifies. I hope you can join us.

As we enter into the Lenten season, we are reminded that we are simple and delicate creatures. We permit ourselves the opportunity to gaze into the mirror of the past and reflect on our past promises, to accept what we have done. Recognizing our condition, we seek to humble ourselves before God and remember that the gifts of love and life we receive were meant to be shared with one another.

Tonight’s Ash Wednesday service will be held at 7:30 PM, February 6th.

Everyone is invited to commune with us in prayerful reflection with a nourishing meal of soup and bread, every Wednesday evening starting at 6:30 PM before the 7:30 PM mid-week Lenten service during this season, starting February 16th.

We are reaching out to help the local communities during this Christmas season. During the next several weeks Our Saviour will be a drop off point for Toys for Tots. Toys should be new. They should not be wrapped.

We are also collecting pajamas for children in shelters in the metropolitan area. The pajamas should be gift-wrapped and marked with the size and “girl” or “boy”. PJs can be from infant to teenage sizes.

This year we also want to encourage you to try an alternative giving program. It is the perfect gift for Christmas stockings. All the monies will be donated to Habitat for Humanity to purchase insulation for homes, or to Bridges to purchase socks and hats for the homeless, or to Our Saviour for our children’s ministry. A gift card will specify which organization will receive the gift based on the donor’s request. This gift offers a twofold blessing, one to the recipient of the card and one to those who serve our community.

The children in our Sunday School are making cards to send to critical or terminally ill children around the country to bring a moment of joy to these families. During the year our youngest classes color pictures to distribute every month to nursing homes, veterans homes and others who request them.

Members of the community are welcome to contribute toys, pajamas or gift cards to help bring joy to those in need. The church will receive donations Tuesdays through Thursdays, during the hours of 10AM to 12PM noon, from November 27 through December 12. Gift cards must be ordered in advance. We will have a dedication and blessing of these gifts on December 9 during the 10:30 AM worship service. Everyone is invited to join us as we offer thanks and dedicate these gifts into a service of bringing joy of the season to the members of our community. The toys and pajamas will be delivered during the week of December 16.

As we are blessed, we will be a blessing to others.
